For Lisa's birthday last weekend I baked a red velvet cake (her favorite).
For easier layering, I wanted the cake to bake flat on top. I read on several different Web sites a tip about wrapping a wet kitchen towel around a cake pan while it bakes to make the cake bake flat. It's on the Internets, so it must be true. I decided to try it.
Results: really hot towels and a cake that looked deformed.
One of the layers cracked (gasp) while I was removing it from the pan. I tried to fill in the gap with frosting. That didn't work so well.
And the layers baked lopsided (as Matt is pointing out below).
We had a good laugh over it. I suggested that instead of cutting the cake, we spoon it out with a ladel. The cake tasted good, at least.
